Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), alleges that Nyesom Wike played a significant role in Peter Obi's decision to leave the party. According to Momodu, the issue began when Atiku suggested ceding power to the Southeast region. However, Wike distanced himself from this idea, stating he's not an Igbo man and isn't interested in Igbo agendas.

Momodu claims Wike's actions were motivated by his own presidential ambitions. He believes Wike wanted to emerge as the PDP's presidential candidate and saw Obi as a potential threat. By frustrating Obi out of the party, Wike allegedly cleared the coast for himself.
