NUPENG Slams Dangote Group Over Alleged Union-Busting
The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has accused the Dangote Group of undermining workers' rights and attempting to weaken competition in the downstream petroleum sector. The union's allegations came in response to a press statement issued by Dangote Petroleum Refinery on September 11, 2025.

NUPENG claimed that Dangote Refinery's statement misrepresented facts about its relationship with workers and their freedom to join the union. The union accused the company of trying to create an illusion of division within NUPENG and of resisting unionization.

According to NUPENG, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on September 9, 2025, acknowledged the company's initial resistance to unionization. The union also alleged that Dangote Refinery directed its truck drivers to remove NUPENG stickers and replace them with stickers of a company-formed association, Direct Trucking Company Drivers Association (DTCDA).

NUPENG further claimed that individuals facing criminal charges for violent crimes, including attempted assassination of union leaders, were now spokespersons for DTCDA and were supporting the company.

The union urged Nigerians not to support a work arrangement that denies workers the right to freedom of association and unionization. As of press time, Dangote Group had yet to respond to the allegations.
